What Are Solvents in Fragrance?
In the world of fragrance, solvents serve two main purposes:
Technical Performance
In some products—like candles or diffusers—solvents help the scent perform better. They work by “lifting” fragrance molecules so the scent can diffuse into the air. Without them, thick bases like wax can trap the fragrance, limiting how much aroma escapes.
Solvents can also adjust the flashpoint (the temperature at which a fragrance becomes flammable), which is necessary for certain products like candles that are poured hot.
Cost Cutting
This is where things get less pretty. Many fragrance suppliers use solvents simply to dilute their oils and lower production costs. Solvents are cheap—very cheap. Adding 50% (or more!) solvent to a fragrance oil drastically reduces the manufacturer’s costs… but it also weakens the fragrance itself.
In some mass-market perfumes, solvent levels can exceed 90%, meaning less than 10% of your “fragrance” is actually fragrance.
